Product Description
The monkey king is one of the most recognized characters from Chinese folklore. His exploits are told in the famous 16th century novel, The Journey to the West, though the actual story dates back possibly a thousand years earlier. While the book is filled with fables and tales of fantasy, it is actually the story of Buddhism's migration to
China. Part of the monkey king's role is to serve as a metaphorical figure who can not be tamed by any of the common Chinese Gods or deities. In fact it is only the Buddha himself that is able to show the monkey king humility and turn his ways of selfish mischief, into heroic deeds for the greater good. Our ceramic figurine is a classic rendition of this famed Chinese character. He is personified, dressed in men's clothing and carrying a staff or sword (which he stole from the great dragon). This is a wonderful gift for anyone interested in Chinese culture and history. It is hand painted and made by one of China's oldest ceramic works factories.
